Q. What are your plans for the future?
A. We are currently performing in different parts of the U.S. (keep checking the site for new dates). We love getting out there and performing live for our fans - such energy! Our first children's book will be completed this summer and we are currently writing episodes for a BoyintheShade TV show.
Q. Why the name BoyintheShade?
A. Well, it has several meanings. When Steve (the
Boy in the Shade) was little, he didn't like to go out in the sun
because he had very fair skin. He preferred the comfort of a shady
tree.
Today BoyintheShade is a magical world where character
counts and self confidence is king. It is now a metaphor for the rollercoaster
experiences of childhood which includes periods of shyness and children
feeling like they don't fit in. When this happens, children may choose
to sit in the "shade."
Now as an adult, Steve (the Boy in the Shade) still
needs to protect himself from too much exposure to the sun. You will
always find him with sunscreen lotion and his signature red baseball
cap.
Q. How do you come up with ideas for songs?
A. Quote from Steve (the Boy in the Shade) –
“I still believe that I have the same feelings that I had when
I was little -- I just understand them a bit better now. So, I write
what I feel – good or bad – and make sense of the feelings
through songs. Sometimes grownups forget about these feelings, but
not me. I still get really excited, a little nervous, and sometimes,
I may even feel like I don’t fit in. But that’s okay,
‘cause I don’t have to fit in as long as I remember to
give love, be myself and always keep trying. And if I didn’t
have all these feelings, I wouldn’t have all these songs!”
Q. Do you have a MySpace?
A. Yes! Here is our link: http://www.myspace.com/boyintheshade
Q. What are the band’s musical influences?
A. Most of us were kids in the 1970’s and were influenced
by the the Muppet Show, Sesame Street and Schoolhouse Rock. Some of our favorite recording artists include Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, The Smiths, Police, The Cure, Radiohead, Cake and Depeche Mode.
Q. Do the bandmembers have
children of their own?
A. Yes, many of us do. Steve has an 8-year old girl and 1-year old boy. Tony, the bassist, has a daughter who is now a toddler and a baby boy. Joe, the drummer, has four kids (two
boys and two girls).
Q. How can I ask a question?
A. We love to hear from our fans. Please e-mail
us your questions at haviken@boyintheshade.com
